A glass cylinder stands with an irregular cross-section, as if it had been snapped and broken. Viewers are surprised by the unexpected sight that greets them when they peer into the cross section from above—a stark contrast to the otherwise static appearance of this icicle-like form. The cross-section is carefully polished, allowing the gaze to pass through nearly 70 cm of glass and reach what lies deep within. Though distorted and warped, the familiar movement of the hands, together with the graduations and numbers, reveals it to be a clock. Salvador Dalí once depicted clocks like melted Camembert cheese, and, in terms of the physics, time and space are said to expand and contract. Kwade has always questioned human perspective on time and space. Her efforts are a reminder that the reality itself may be distorted.
