IZUMI KATO
untitled
Year: 2012
Medium: wood, acrylic
Dimensions: 65 x 30 x 25 cm (25 5/8 x 11 7/8 x 9 7/8 in.)
Acquired from a private collection, 2024
This work was one of the many sculptures that Kato presented as outdoor installations at the “2012 Rokko Meets Art - Art Walk”. The sculpture features a figure with one arm raised high, with the fingers forming a peace sign. Another work (Collection #661), which was acquired at the same time, presents a figure with both arms raised in fists. Given their similarity in form, they could be considered a pair of works. The large, round, red eyes on this sculpture stand in contrast to its black-eyed companion. Kato’s works often possess the chilling effect of penetrating the viewer’s psyche. Although the figure’s expression may seem a little unsettling, the overall tone of the work exudes a humorous charm.
