IZUMI KATO

Born in Shimane Prefecture, Japan in 1969. Kato graduated from Musashino Art University, College of Art and Design with his BA in Oil Painting in 1992. His expression spans various fields, including painting, sculpture, and musical activities. Figures depicted by Kato often feature curved limbs and a large head reminiscent of a fetus. His paintings and sculptures are highly figurative, yet not realistic, and his magical or primitive expressive power compelling the viewer to contemplate various aspects of human existence. He has held major solo exhibitions at Watari Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo) in 2022, SCAD Museum of Art (Savannah, US) in 2021, Hara Museum ARC (Gunnma) in 2019, Fundación Casa Wabi (Puerto Escondido, Mexico) in 2019, The Ueno Royal Museum (Tokyo) in 2008, and Art Tower Mito in 2001 among others. He has also presented his work at international exhibitions, such as the Hawaii Triennial (US) in 2022, the 2021–22 edition of the Reborn-Art Festival, and the 52nd edition of La Biennale di Venezia in 2007 (Italian Pavilion). His works are held in the collections of institutions including The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, The National Museum of Art, Osaka, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and SCAD Museum of Art.
