This is one of a series named “Overpainted Photographs”, in which Richter took snapshots of his family, house, or cityscapes he visited, then oil-painted on the surface of photographs. Being part of the series, this work is categorized as “Rural Landscapes”. The photograph setting probably suggests a mountain landscape. One can also see snow on the rocky terrain; thus, one can imagine the harsh environment. What would be the artist’s intention to cover the bottom part of the work with dark paint? This work clearly expresses the interest unique to an artist who wanders between photography and painting. It is titled as the creation date, and the numbers of works imply that this is part of Richter’s daily production activity. Richter signed and titled on the upper-left corner of the work.
