The plants are meticulously sculpted from aluminum foil. The mirror-polished surface of the foil strongly reflects the surrounding light and scenery. Whereas artificial flowers seek to reproduce the characteristics of plants as seamlessly as possible, Mitsuya’s works would likewise imitate plant forms but do not aim for a qualitative unity. Rather, through meticulously rendering the forms of natural objects, the work reveals to the viewer the inevitable otherness that emerges within the act of imitation, or mimesis.
