Born in Osaka in 1979, Mitsuya graduated from the Sculpture Class of the Fine Arts Department at Seian University of Art and Design in 2004 and is currently based primarily in Berlin. Since childhood, Mitsuya has been familiar with aluminum foil as a material for playful handcrafts, and he has continued to use it mainly in sculptures and installations. He also creates two-dimensional works in which landscapes emerge through traces left by polishing metal plate surfaces with tools. In 2010, Mitsuya received the Grand Prize (Taro Okamoto Award) at the 13th Exhibition of the Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art. In 2022, he participated in the Lindau Biennale in Germany, and his work “The Aluminum Garden” has been permanently installed at Skulpturenpark Schlossgut Schwante on the outskirts of Berlin since 2022. The artist's wide-ranging practice also includes a project with the Berlin/New York-based architectural unit June 14 Meyer-Grohbrügge & Chermayeff, a collaboration with FENDI Fragrances, and special exhibitions presented at 54 Audemars Piguet boutiques worldwide.
