The original of this work was produced in 2006, a large-scale painting measuring 290x290 cm and was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2007. It is currently on a long-term loan at the TATE Modern in London. Most of Richter’s works are abstract pieces, often simply titled “Abstraktes Bild” (abstract painting). However, there are sometimes series created under specific titles. This work is one of the series of six works entitled “Cage”. The vivid colors stretched with a squeegee, which is often seen on Richter’s abstract works, is eye-catching. The title “Cage” does not mean a hutch or a birdcage, but comes from the name of John Cage. He is an American musician known for the monumental pieces of his experimental music such as “4’33” and “Chance Operations”. It is said that Richter worked on this piece while constantly playing Cage’s music in his studio.
