RITSUE MISHIMA

VENERE
Born in Kyoto, Japan in 1962. Mishima moved to Venice in 1989 and began visiting the glass workshops on Murano Island while creating works starting in 1996. Mishima’s works are produced in collaboration with the glass artisans in Murano. Venetian glass tends to focus on glamorous decorations and vividly colored glass, but she applies the inherent characteristics of soda glass, namely its high transparency and flexible formability to her work. The delicate forms created by colorless and transparent glass capture light and envelop it within the work, creating a complex universe in the body. In 2009, her works were selected for “...fa come natura face in foco” in the Venice Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale. In addition, she has been highly acclaimed in international exhibitions such as Yokohama Triennale in 2014. Major solo exhibitions were held at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam) in 2010, and Palazzo Grimani (Venice) in 2013. In 2022, Mishima was the first Japanese to have a solo exhibition at the Accademia Gallery, one of the most important art institutes in Italy with the greatest treasures of Venetian paintings. Her works are in the collections of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Frans Hals Museum (Haarlem, the Netherlands), Museum of Decorative Arts (Paris), The Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum (Shizuoka), etc.
