NOBUYA HOKI

untitled
Born in Kyoto in 1966, Hoki graduated from the Graduate School of Arts of Kyoto City University of Arts with a master’s degree in Painting in 1993. His works primarily focus on line-based expressions and he has produced oil paintings among other forms of art. In his early career, he created paintings on multiple canvases, flawless line depictions on paper using colored pencils, and figurative sketches with round dots and circles on pen nibs. Around 2005, Hoki developed his own style of drawing with double lines which he calls “nihon-ga” (double-line painting). “Nihon-ga” is painted with a special paintbrush that he made himself (although now he holds two ready-made brushes) to paint with two brushes simultaneously. Hoki’s works have been featured in several important exhibitions of Japanese contemporary art since the 2000s, including “Roppongi Crossing 2004” (Mori Art Museum, Tokyo), the 2006 Australia-Japan Year of Exchange Exhibition “rapt! - 20 contemporary artists from Japan” (Monash University Museum of Art, Melbourne), and “Garden of Painting” (The National Museum of Art, Osaka) in 2010. His works are held in the collections of the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, National Museum of Art Osaka, Takamatsu Art Museum (Kagawa), Okazaki Mindscape Museum (Aichi), etc. Hoki is also a professor in the Department of Oil Painting at his alma mater, Kyoto City University of Arts.
