Jane Fonda (F. & S. II. 268) is a work from Andy Warhol’s representative “Portrait” series. The photograph is transferred using a silkscreen technique, and the combination of various colors evokes a pop yet compelling presence. The work conveys the sophisticated beauty of famous Hollywood actress Jane Fonda who serves as its model. While Warhol produced portraits of celebrities and iconic figures the times, in the 1980s he also worked on commissioned portraits of ordinary people (wealthy patrons). It is no exaggeration to say that the images of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, and Mao Zedong are now imprinted in our minds in association with the images of Warhol's portraits. The large number of portraits that he produced between the 1960s and 1980s are indeed in themselves “portraits” of an era.
