“PRISM” is a convergent variation of Nawa’s series of work, beads covered “PixCell” named “BEADS”, which a transparent box (cells) is enclosed with prism sheets to cover surfaces of taxidermied animals or objects. This work features the same mandarin duck from Ueshima Collection’s “Mandarin Duck” that was acquired earlier in 2018. The mandarin duck in the box (cell) is covered with prism sheets which, viewed from any angles, appears as if split by a polarizing prism, distorted, overlapping each other. Because the box is hermetically sealed, it is impossible to verify its existence by hand, and seeing it with the eyes is the only way to confirm its existence, but it is not clearly visible no matter how one looks at it. The PixCell series is clearly based on a digital concept, yet brilliantly visualized by means of prismatic effect, through a transparent and sealed box, suggesting a binary contrast between one’s perceptions and the real called dichotomy. Like many other species of ducks, mandarin ducks undergo a moult after the mating season into eclipse plumage, and lose their bright coloration and adopt more subdued shades. If one must cite a specific characteristic of using mandarin duck as a theme, it is that life which originally depends on the Eclipse cycle, through conceptual creation, is now replaced by sculpture that will never perish.
