The artist reached a major turning point at the Yokohama Triennale in 2008. Since then and continues to this day, Konishi began to incorporate powerful, linear strokes into his painting, and they can also be seen in this piece. This work reveals that his early works are often expressed in a figurative manner yet at the same time destroying their forms with wavy, meandering brushstrokes. Konishi’s portraits are mainly based on photographs of his family members. Despite being the closest figures to Konishi, the people depicted are simply sketched in a manner that their facial expressions seem to be stripped away. Their faces are indeed blank and emotionless. While his works are referring to snapshots of his family members, this must be an everyday scene, yet the space around this work is distorted by strangely wavy strokes in the background and is transformed into something extraordinary.
