In recent years, Rottenberg has focused on technologies for reclaiming discarded plastic. She has long treated the filmsy and grotesque qualities of plastic as a symbol of excessive consumption and capitalism. Rottenberg’s practice, which creates beautiful light from materials produced for human convenience yet deemed harmful and unwanted, is a biting irony directed at a contemporary society riddled with contradictions.
