The title “Rereading” makes it difficult to realize immediately what is being represented in this work. It is certain, however, that this painting is deconstructed to such an extent. Hatayama’s painting goes through a process of what he calls “substantial perception”, in which stimuli and sensations perceived from external means that cannot be captured by the eyes are being internalized. Through sensations that surpass the 5 senses, things nurtured inside the artist are visualized by means of the painting. Hatayama once again outputs from within himself to the outside world. By putting himself as the intermediary to circulate the perception between the inside and outside, the artist creates an image. If we interpret this cycle as “Rereading” for all phenomena, are we able to get closer to what Hatayama calls “substantial perception”?
