As the name “Patio” (courtyard) suggests, the painting is based on a space that is probably a house and its courtyard. However, objects that are irrelevant scattered around the canvas. In the artist’s statement, Teramoto describes “Patio” as a space for objects that “serve the purpose of existence”. Courtyard, to the artist, is an area that connects the outside and inside. Even though objects inside and outside of the house are mixed together like being in brackish water, it is a place of peace and tranquility with no sense of incongruity. Whether that is a human, an animal, stone, a stalk of grass, air or even light, all on equal terms, Teramoto is only trying to depict their as-is existence.
