AKASHI TERAMOTO

Patio - 穴を掘る人- / Patio -Person digging the hole-
Born in 1992 in Kanagawa prefecture, Japan. Teramoto completed his postgraduate studies at Tama Art University in 2017. He produced paintings and installations during his time at university. In recent years, he has developed a series of paintings titled “Patio”- a series which he describes various objects, creatures, and phenomena in a space in complete harmony. To Teramoto, “Patio” refers to the concept that matters in a state of divergence that could be placed in a neutral space, and tentatively, a courtyard. The word “Patio” originates from the southern Spanish Andalucía region featured in medieval architecture, an open space for hot summertime and was used as a common area shared by the neighborhood for eating, casual conversations, growing plants and flowers, or as a play area for children. Since all kinds of relationships are considered to be even or neutral, all conflicts are abstained. Teramoto's work completely ignores the original attributes of the various motifs depicted. There is a pleasant chaos there. He received Ichiro Fukuzawa Award in 2015 and was nominated for the Shell Art Award in 2021.
