Delhomme is not only a landscape painter—many of his paintings are of flowers. In these paintings, a book is always placed beside the flowers. The title suggests that the book here is a monograph on the French artist Dubuffet, a prominent figure in the Art Informel movement. The viewer is given a sense not only of Delhomme’s reverence toward his great predecessor and fellow Frenchman but also of a certain intimacy. The pink roses symbolize gratitude and joy. The two artists share the given name Jean-Philippe, and this may feel like more than mere coincidence to Delhomme.
