This work belongs to one of Shinohara’s best-known series, the “Motorcycle Sculpture” series, for which he also has the “Boxing Painting” series. The artist began creating these works in 1972 using discarded materials he collected from across the city of New York and continued the series ever since. The faces of the two figures riding motorcycles while holding a child appear violent, yet the scene can also be read as a comical moment of family horseplay. The forceful recombination and vigorous revival of discarded materials, objects that seem to have exhausted all their latent energy, reveal the hunger that continues to burn within Shinohara’s spirit.
