YUICHI HIRAKO
Lost in Thought 37
Year: 2019
Medium: acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 116.7 x 91 cm (46 x 35 7/8 in.)
Acquired from Christies, 2022
The artwork is part of “Lost in Thought,” one of Hirako’s representative series. A dark lake spreads out wide. A homely cabin with a chimney sits at the edge of the lake as rabbits and birds calmly mingle amongst themselves. A man enjoys his time fishing on a boat on the lake as another man sways in a hammock set up on the other side of the cabin. These men seem to be coexisting with nature in this forest, maintaining a comfortable distance. Hirako’s paintings depict the fine balance between nature and people’s daily lives. Although life in the forest may appear serene, surely there are times when the harshness of nature threatens the men’s sense of safety––just as the giant fish in the middle of the lake opens its large mouth towards the little birds resting their wings.
