The series titled "puddle in the woods" was created based on Maruyama's experience of walking through the forest. Depicted through using a staining technique of spreading water on an untreated canvas and allowing it to absorb the paint through water, the contours of the tree trunks and branches, the grove space, as well as the ground and the puddles are obscured, and the interspersed array of colors instill the painting with a pleasant rhythm. Maruyama’s characteristic painterly spaces that lie in the elusive realm between figurative and abstract, evoke an air of familiarity perhaps because we have each experienced and hold with our memories the light that is depicted there. It was presented at the exhibition "Monet’s Legacy" held at the Yokohama Museum of Art in 2018, as a symbolic work by a contemporary artist that resonates with Monet's perspective and painterly expression.
