ADRIAN GHENIE
Born in Baia Mare (Romania) in 1977, graduated from the Art and Design University of Cluj-Napoca in 2001. With a distinctive style of combining figuration and abstraction using a palette knife, Ghenie becomes a leading painter representing modern Romania. His paintings are set with a background of wars and dark events that cast a shadow in European history, as well as various anxieties in modern society. With strong brushstrokes and fluidity, Ghenie had a solo exhibition at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015 as a representative artist of the Romanian Pavilion, where he presented a series of works that related to Darwin's theory of natural selection and Nazi eugenics. In recent years, he has produced paintings like a contrastive analysis of the changes in the posture of people nowadays caused by the constant use of smartphones and tablets in our daily lives, in relation to Baroque art with his own interpretation in art history. Ghenie’s works are in the collections at major museums such as the Centre Pompidou (Paris), Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Long Museum (Shanghai). Apart from the 56th Venice Biennale mentioned above, Ghenie continues to achieve international success with solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg), Palazzo Cini (Venice), etc. His is always in the spotlight as one of the most popular artists in the market at auctions and other venues.
