JR
JR was born in Paris (FR) in 1983. Always wearing sunglasses, his many identities remain obscure. Beginning his career as a street artist, he captures the activities of his fellow street artists including himself, and posts them in guerrilla style, along with his graffiti in the city with the camera he found on the street, which gradually catches the attention of the public. Since he started in an environment being left out, until now, JR's creation has been addressing social discords such as poverty, inequality, racial issues, and conflicts. Moreover, in the “Inside Out” series, a program that involves citizen participation, portraits of participants are printed on huge posters and displayed on the streets in the city. As a spokesperson for voices being oppressed, these activities are consequently widely supported by citizens. They are showcased in art museums and public programs until today. In recent years, a retrospective exhibition entitled “JR: Chronicle” has been held at Saatchi Gallery (London, 2020) and (NY, 2018). JR created anamorphosis which causes optical illusions at The Louvre Pyramid and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. He continues to work on large-scale projects, changing the city and space visually with the use of collages of photographs.
