Born in 1756, Raku Ryônyû IX was the second son of Raku Chônyû VII and succeeded as the ninth head after the early death of Raku Tokunyū VIII. He developed varied forms through expressive trimming, influencing the work of later generations. He died in 1834. He absorbed Kōetsu's approach to form into his own trimming and glazing, and continued to develop new modes, including white-glazed work, after retirement.
