GIDEON APPAH
Born in Accra, Ghana, in 1987. Appah received his BFA degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Kumasi, Ghana) in 2012. As if he traces his roots to his Ghanaian cultural background, Appah creates paintings with imaginary scenes based on newspaper clippings from the 1950s to the 1980s, as well as stills from Ghana’s post-colonial films. Following his first solo exhibition at the Goethe Institut (Accra) in 2013, he has held other solo exhibitions at the Nubuke Foundation (Accra, 2017) and the Institute for Contemporary Art at the University of Commonwealth Virginia (Richmond, US, 2022). Appah's works were featured in the exhibition program organized by the FEMSA Foundation at Luis Barragán (Mexico, 2019). He has also been invited to be the representative artist of the Ghana Pavilion at the 23rd Triennale di Milano in 2022. In 2015, he was awarded the 1st Merit Prize Award at the ABSA L'Atelier Art Competition organized by Barclays Africa Group (Johannesburg, South Africa) and has received various awards and grants in Ghana. His works are held in the collections of the Absa Museum (Johannesburg), Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (Marrakech, Morocco), and Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto, Canada).
