OSAMU MORI

D after dark - Santa Claus
Born in Aichi, Japan in 1983, Mori received his master’s degree in sculpture from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2009. With the support of his outstanding carving techniques and precise sketches of forms, as well as his unique interpretation of Academicism since ancient Greek sculpture such as iconography and mythological motifs, the sculptures Mori create showcase a dynamism unparalleled by any contemporary Japanese sculptors. Incomparable wood sculptures such as the 4-meter-high hermaphrodite sculpture of Elvis Presley and the combined sculpture of several Nike statues, Mori’s works are in complete harmony of multiple elements, carving an unusually condensed piece of existence. In recent years, he has continued to explore new possibilities in sculpture, presenting works guided by the shapes of deformed trees and plastic statues created from combinations of clay and tree forms. Mori has participated in the Gunma Biennale for Young Artists (Museum of Modern Art, Gunma) in 2008, the 20th Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art (Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum, Kawasaki) in 2009, the Yokohama Triennale (Yokohama Museum of Art) in 2011, etc. His works are held in the collections of Tokyo University of the Arts, National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne) and others.
