HERNAN BAS
Born in Miami (US) in 1979, Hernan Bas graduated from the New World School of the Arts (Miami) in 1996. As evidenced by the influence of 18th-century Romanticism and the 19th-century Decadent movement, Bas is an artist renewing symbolism and Romanesque qualities in contemporary painting. While addressing current issues such as gender and politics in modern society, he adopts a variety of artistic approaches across a range of genres, including history painting, portraiture, landscape, and still life, using allegory and symbolism in these classical forms of painting to indirectly convey themes. Bas has been presenting his work internationally and has been highly regarded since the early stage of his career. He participated in the Whitney Biennial in 2004, and “The Collectors” exhibition (Danish & Nordic Pavilion) curated by Elmgreen & Dragset, which received a Special Mention Award at the 53rd edition of La Biennale di Venezia in 2009. Bas regularly holds solo exhibitions at world-class galleries and major museums, and many of his works are included in public institutions such as MoMA (New York), the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington D.C.), the Carré d’Art-Musée d’art contemporain (Nîmes, France), and Yale University Art Gallery (New Haven), as well as in prominent private collections.
