YUKI NARA
Born in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan in 1989. Nara completed his BA in Architecture at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2013, then graduated at the top of the list from both Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Center in 2016 and Tokyo University of the Arts with his MA in Architecture at the Graduate School of Fine Arts in 2017. He is the eldest son of Ohi Kiln in Kanazawa which has a history of over 350 years. He is a ceramic artist as well as an architect. After working at Atsushi Kitagawara Architects, Nara became independent and started to run EARTHEN for his own architectural projects. Although he was born into a family that produces traditional hand-molded Raku ware, he is known for his coordinated and structural ceramic art that made use of his background in architecture. The “Bone Flower” series is a vessel that made Nara well-known to the world. Instead of separating the inside and outside, it is wrapped in an airy structure like a lattice, gently maintaining its function as a vessel. He is a contemporary artist who boldly moves between tradition and innovation. He has exhibited his works at numerous craft exhibitions and art fairs in Japan and overseas. He is also expanding his field of activities such as collaboration with floral artist Nicolai Bergmann. His works are in the collection of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa etc.
