IORI SUGAMA
Sugama is currently enrolled in the Tokyo University of the Arts, majoring in Oil Painting. She mainly focuses on creating with an abstract approach and continues with her series titled “Overlapping Landscape”. Although it has the meaning of scenery overlaying each other, there is no specific depiction. Sugama’s works are characterized by complex and heavy overlapping of colors and line-drawing. A tube of paint or a piece of paper in her works becomes the only notable element that catches the viewer’s eye.Sugama’s works are exhibited at the Tokyo University of the Arts Yuga 3 Exhibition “où” (3331 Arts Chiyoda, 2022) etc.

Year: 2022Although there is no uniformity in this work, the first thing that catches the eye is the blue color that completely covered the whole painting. Strictly speaking, the blue color in this painting is limited. Instead, red, green, and yellow are blended together onto a worn-out palette and create a new blue. This complexity of color mixtures could be revealed upon a closer look to the work. In the 1950s, European Art Informel artists denied all forms and emphasized on the expression of poetic abstractions. No concrete image is immediately recognizable in this painting. Despite that, a tube of paint is smeared on the upper part of the work, expressing a strong narrative against a pictorial lyricism. Suddenly, a concrete object, not even a depiction, was inserted into the work. This may suggest a challenge over the “all-over” style of painting which was promoted by the American abstract expressionism.
