UMAR RASHID

Payback is a motherfucker. The final death of Harlem Carl. Or, in another time, he would have outlived us all.
Born in Chicago (US) in 1976, Rashid graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2000. He is also known for his work under the name Frohawk Two Feathers. He depicts the history of a fictional empire called the Frenglish Empire. Rashid continues to research the colonialist history of various countries and paints alternative historical narratives that might have been inspired by factual events. In the “Ancien Regime Change” series, reminiscent of the pre-revolutionary French monarchy, this group of works is drawn in various artistic styles while ranging over from contemporary culture to ancient mythology. They encourage viewers to think about the alternative possibility to the obvious fact that contemporary society is established on past history. In addition to the solo exhibition at MoMA PS1 (NY) in 2022, Rashid has also participated in numerous group exhibitions at the Hammer Museum (LA) and Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LA). His works are held in collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Hudson River Museum (NY), Nevada Museum of Art, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Africa (Cape Town, South Africa), etc.
