TAKANOSUKE YASUI

Kitakami River, summer
Born in Aichi Prefecture, Japan in 1993, Yasui graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the Tokyo University of Arts in 2018. The artist moves freely between both sculpture and painting in his practice. Yasui applies the technique of modeling with plaster and fabric, usually used for making plaster statues, to create support for his paintings. In painting, a raised surface or materiality on the canvas is expressed principally through the medium of paint itself. However, Yasui explores a different approach, distinct from the impasto and brushwork traditionally used to create movement and tactility in painting. He models a three-dimensional structure underneath, then layers the paint on top. Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, Yasui has continually produced work for Seawall Museum Ogatsu, a project to establish murals on the seawall built in Ogatsu, Ishinomaki City. His accolades include selection for the Tokyo Wonder Wall in 2014, and as a finalist for the 4th CAF Award in 2017.
