IVÁN NAVARRO

Back to Square One
Born in Santiago (Chile) in 1972, graduated from Pontificia Universidad Católica (Santiago) in 1995. Born and raised in Chile under Pinochet’s military dictatorship, Navarro has profound memories derived from the unstable domestic economy and political censorship. He mentioned that these issues are the core motivation for his work as an artist. He mainly produces light sculptures and installations, but contrary to their glamorous nature, the direct political criticism and human rights issues addressed in his works are severe. Navarro has experienced the former Chilean regime’s intentional act of power outages for citizen control. Therefore, in his works, the electrical mechanisms are symbols of oppression and control. Apart from representing Chile at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009, Navarro’s works have been exhibited at Towner Gallery (UK, 2009), Centro de Arte Caja de Burgos (ES, 2010), MoMA PS1. (NY, 2014), Museum of Contemporary Art of Buenos Aires (2019) and many other international and museum solo exhibitions. His works are included in international contemporary art collections including the Guggenheim Museum (NY), the Paris National Foundation for Contemporary Art, LVMH Collection, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington, DC), Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea.
