RAFA MACARRON
Born in Madrid, Spain in 1981. Macarrón has a unique background as a former professional cyclist and a self-taught artist. He professes to be influenced by J. Dubuffet, who is also known as the proponent of Art Brut*. For Macarrón, who himself had not received formal art education, the concept of art brut must have been an important foothold for his position in the art scene. He captures the daily life of the city satirically and intuitively paints it without drafts. Many of his works depict a crowd of people with large heads and exaggerated facial expressions, while their limbs are thin and deformed like wires. A distorted space resembling the outer space or other world is expressed lively by characters with facial expressions filled with emotions. Vivid colors and his seemingly abstract compositions are also unique, bringing worldwide recognition for his strong self-taught talent. Macarrón received the BMW Painting Award in 2010 and has had solo exhibitions at museums and institutions including CVG Foundation (Beijing, China, 2019), Málaga Centre for Contemporary Art (Malaga, Spain, 2021), and La Nave Salinas Foundation (Ibiza, Spain, 2021). His works are in collections of the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in New York, and at Fundación BMW and Collection Mercadona in his home country, Spain, among others. *Art Brut (raw art): Outsider Art. An important concept in contemporary art, which is a background of accepting diversity, including all forms of artistic expression that do not conform to the norms of Western art (academism).
