YUSUKE FUKUI
Born in Toyama prefecture, Japan in 1971. Fukui has lived in Budapest, Hungary since 1991 and completed his master’s degree in painting at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 1998. While living in Hungary which is in Central Europe, he continues to work as a Japanese artist from East Asia and create while reflecting on the cultural differences between the two regions. The development of works derived from Japanese painting styles such as paintings with Japanese pigments and ink, and folding screen painting, which can be said to have been created from Fukui’s fundamental philosophy. Furthermore, upon learning about the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 while in Hungary, it triggered his deeper interest in energy issues which paved way for developing the “Tesla” series. Fukui has held solo exhibition at the Kiscell Museum (Budapest, 2015), and collaborative exhibition of his own work with collection at the Paksi Museum (2022), etc. He temporarily returned to Japan due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has been participating in the Artist-in-Residence Programme organised by the Koganecho Area Management Centre as a resident artist since 2021. His works are in the collections of Hungarian University of Fine Arts, Saku Municipal Museum of Modern Art,and Kiscell Museum (Hungary), etc.
