This work is one of the “Gordian Puzzles” series. It is based on “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo da Vinci, but the series also include works based on other famous paintings around the world such as “Guernica” (Picasso), “A Sunday Afternoon on La Grande Jatte” (Seurat), and “The Tower of Babel” (Bruegel). As the title “Gordian” suggests, it is a complicated work like an intricate puzzle entangled badly and unsolvable. Looking at the puzzle pieces closely, none of the cuts of adjacent pieces match. Despite this, the complete picture that is supposed to appear only upon completion of the assembly, is clearly visible. Multiple sets of puzzles with the same pattern were used.
