One of the many flower vases Kuroda produced, also known as hanaike in Japanese. This work is distinguished by its balanced form, with an exceptionally small mouth that broadens in a gentle arc to the shoulders, then tapers toward the lower body. After firing without glaze, it was meticulously polished with several grades of sandpaper. Although it takes the form of a flower vase, Kuroda did not create it in accordance with its purpose. His white porcelain is not about pursuing glaze effects, form, or function. Rather, it is about seeking truth at the very limit of what a white vessel could be.
