The work brings together a delicacy that seems on the verge of collapse, a roughness like sand and gravel, and the intense crawling of glaze in gentle hues. These extremes intermingle throughout the work. A defining feature of Yasunaga's practice is his use of glaze, rather than clay, as the primary material. Because glaze has a much lower melting point than ceramic clay, careful temperature control and ingenuity are required to maintain the form during firing. The difficulty is apparent in the precarious balance the work retained through the firing process. Any utility it might have had as a vessel has melted away with the glaze. True to its title, emptiness and void have been fired into form.
