The white porcelain body visible through the black glaze and incised grid forms a crisp contrast. The orderly grid establishes a steady rhythm. However, that rhythm suddenly begins to unravel. The black-and-white palette and minimal grid, together with the hardness and smooth surface of the porcelain, create a taut atmosphere, while these breaks in rhythm gently release the tension. Despite its sophisticated sculptural vocabulary, its approachable mode of expression is quintessentially Kusaka.
