Although Hamana calls this work a tsubo, or jar, its size that is large enough to fill one's arms and its broad mouth make it resemble an earthenware jar or even a cauldron. The form is built by coiling rope-like lengths of clay upward from the base to the opening. It appears distorted, as though it can barely support its own scale. A dark brown glaze covers the surface, which is marked with a fine mesh pattern. Looking into the wide mouth, the interior feels more spacious than its exterior would suggest. As Hamana has spoken of wanting to make “something that deceives oneself,” embracing forms that defy expectations is the very way he wishes to engage with vessels.
