Although this work is modeled on a classical portrait, neither the face nor the body is depicted directly. Several cordyline leaves hang downward in place of the head. The red dress falls in elegant folds, yet appears tightly drawn upward from the chest, as if in an act of refusal. Throughout the history of painting, femininity has often been unnecessarily idealized and exploited through the male gaze. A single white pearl contrasts with the rippling red dress. Although no facial expression is shown, the work evokes a strong will to resist.
