The title of this work is taken from a passage in Italo Calvino’s "Mr. Palomar" and was also used as the title of the artist’s solo exhibition at Museum MACAN in 2025. An eerie skeletal arm reaches into the sea, probing through the water. Faintly visible in the blue depths are houses and the people who live there. Just as the sea is formed by countless ripples that join and overlap, history is likewise shaped by the complex intermingling of the lives and actions of countless people, like an underwater world in constant motion. Taking her own position as a point of departure, Imazu extends an arm into the histories of Indonesia and Japan, feeling her way through the past.
