The paining depicts eyes belonging to no identifiable person hover in the darkness. The work originates in the artist’s childhood memories of feeling unease under the gaze of others. Roughly half of the composition is occupied by the eyes in the darkness, while the remainder consists of vivid depictions of plants and fragments resembling sketches. Each element is painted on a different canvas and boldly stitched together. In Okinawa, where the artist’s roots lie, American, Japanese, and Ryukyuan cultures intermingle. The artist superimposes this chimera-like cultural hybridity onto the formative experiences underlying their creativity.
