Two beds placed side by side. The “Quarantine in Shanghai” series, including this work, are drawings created based on Shiota’s actual experience. During the winter of 2021, when strict infection control measures were in place, Shiota spent her quarantine period in a hotel room in Shanghai and created a number of drawings depicting the interior of the room during that time. The bed placed towards the back remained being made neatly. Shiota probably slept in the closer one which is overlaid with red depictions. The netlike red depictions appear to be extending from the bed to the wall, spreading into the room, as if to show that Shiota’s body had been lying there until just recently. The black threads extend from the bed, as if to evoke the presence of the invisible body, aim towards the bright window, perhaps in search of relief.
