This work shows the most recent developmental elements of Matsumoto’s “Green” series. In previous “Green” works, green was mainly used as the color surface and with overlapping line drawings with colors such as pastel white and blue, expressing a dynamism different from brush strokes. Perhaps due to the effect of these lines, the painting space on the canvas is distorted, and even looks like shaking trees rustling in a deep forest. In this work, the colors of blue and orange that glimpse through the gaps come out vividly. Particularly the orange has a strong presence as an opposite color in the green, making it very much different from other works. It is filled with energy reminiscent of a robust sprout growing vertically from the bottom. Matsumoto’s “Tropical” is a peristalsis movement of life and color. Her solo exhibition scheduled in May 2021 (Nihombashi Takashimaya Art Gallery X) was canceled due to the spread of Covid-19 and was finally held in November after being postponed for half a year. This work was displayed in the center as the main piece of the exhibition.
