Two ensō forms (circular forms) are painted with interference paint and hang side by side. The relationship between the colors of the circle and the background is always different in the left and right panels. The ensō is frequently depicted in Zen calligraphy and painting. Although it has been interpreted in various ways, including as enlightenment, the universe, and truth, these interpretations signify a totality that encompasses all things. For Francis, the circle evokes the cycle between the world and the self as experienced through zazen and serves as a window or mirror for self-reflection. This work reflects his varied perspectives on the circle.
