If one must single out one element that stands out in this work, it would probably be the brownish color that occupies the bottom part, and the vivid bright blue and white tones that occupy the upper part. The brown area is emphasized with horizontal strokes, depicting fallen trees or their eroded roots or lumps of earth in the forests. Hatayama mentioned in his past interviews that the title “Planet” has probably unintentionally led us to imagine the bright blue and white as vast space, light, or atmosphere. As such, perception is often based on processing all kinds of information, both consciously and unconsciously. Assuming the intuition or instinct, which the artist repeatedly refers to as “substantial perception,” exists, makes us wonder how far we, as viewers, are able to follow the sensations that the artist is trying to reach whilst looking at the overlapping brush strokes of richly colored works.
