XU ZHEN®
Xu Zhen®︎ was born in Shanghai, China in 1977 and graduated from Shanghai Arts & Crafts Institute. Xu is an artist and also a curator who emerged from contemporary society, particularly the modern Chinese society of economic development and mass consumption culture. While he recognizes himself as a pop artist, he exhibits the attitude and spirituality of the 1960s American Pop Art. His production activities are based on the production team called “MadeIn Company”, which seems to be a reference to Warhol’s “Factory”. The artist name “Xu Zhen®︎” is also an art brand of “MadeIn Company”, and the physical retail store “Xu Zhen Store” was launched in 2016. As Xu once stated, “Everything in society is a shopping mall”, he defines creation in general as his own art, including economic activities which actively engage with society. His works have been exhibited in key international exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale (2001 & 2005), Lyon Biennale (2013), and Sydney Biennale (2016), and has also held solo exhibitions at international art museums including Kunsthaus Graz (Austria, 2015), and the Long Museum (Shanghai, 2015). His works are held in collections at Tate Modern (London, UK), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Fondation Louis Vuitton (Paris), and M+ Museum (Hong Kong), etc.
