Born in 1887, Raku Seinyû XIII was the eldest son of Raku Kônyû XII and succeeded as Kichizaemon XIII in 1919. He was accomplished in painting, calligraphy, waka poetry, Chinese learning, and Noh chanting, and promoted tea culture through the publication of a tea journal. His work remained closely aligned with traditional Raku tea-bowl forms. He died in 1944. Through sustained glaze research, he developed crystalline white effects in jakatsu glaze, while his sculptural works display detailed modeling and rich color.
