Born in 1631 in Haji Village, Kawachi Province, Ohi Hodoan I studied under Raku Ichinyû IV. In 1666, he accompanied Urasenke tea master Sensō Sōshitsu IV to Kanazawa, where he established a kiln in Ohi Village under the patronage of Maeda Tsunanori, lord of the Kaga domain. Ohi ware is distinguished by hand-building, amber glaze, and the use of local Ohi clay. He died in 1712.
