Sputniko! was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1985. She graduated from Imperial College London with a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science in 2006, and completed a Master’s Degree at the Royal College of Art in 2010. She works as a multimedia artist, exploring themes of technology, identity, and contemporary society. She creates video works and installations that investigate the cultural and social advancements driven by technological development, while critically examining the negative aspects that can emerge as a result. From 2013 to 2017, Sputniko! served as an Assistant Professor at the MIT Media Lab, where she founded the Design Fiction group. She is currently an Associate Professor at Tokyo University of the Arts. Her works are held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and M+ (Hong Kong).
