KENTARO MINOURA
Minoura was born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan in 1978. He has been painting since childhood, like many children who learn how to draw under all kinds of influences. Similar to mastering characters, a person earns a certain degree of common understanding and acceptance through imitation. During which, if one encounters a unique culture of a country or region, that individual adopts his/her own cultural sphere. Minoura is truly painting endlessly. Perhaps the amount of work he has imitated and mastered is much more than others. Those paintings must have filled up the wall when it comes to his solo exhibition. Those works that the artist accumulated as opposed to what had been let go must be excessive. This excessiveness ultimately leads the artist to transcend individuality and approach universality. In Minoura’s recent works, some sort of life forms with unknown identities are depicted. Even though the creature’s vaguely defined contour is finally visible from smudged brushstrokes, the identity of the creature is still unclear. It is, however, positive that a living organism is present in the painting. Such kind of vagueness yet convincing recognition is what we would call universality. In the early stage of Minoura’s career, he was actively involved in music, and was the director of independent label Pinto (currently inactive). He created the cover image for Ginkgo BOYZ album "DOOR" (2005) and has collaborated with photographer Kotori Kawashima on many projects, including co-authoring and publishing "Meisei" and "Toriko", as well as collections including "Mikanseitairiku," "Decapitron 3," and "Hello, Good” etc.
